Common washer problems and what causes them

What you see Likely cause Typical fix
Water stays in the drum Clogged drain pump filter or hose, failed drain pump Clear the clog or replace the pump
Drum will not spin Worn drive belt, lid switch, motor coupling, door lock Replace the failed part
Water on the floor Cracked inlet hose, door boot seal, tub seal, pump leak Replace hose, seal or pump
Will not start Door or lid not latching, control board, power supply Replace latch, switch or board
Loud banging or grinding Worn drum bearings, shock absorbers, out-of-balance load Replace bearings or suspension
Clothes still wet after the cycle Slow drain, a worn belt or clutch Repair drain or drive

Two problems are common enough to have their own guides: a washer that will not drain and a washer that will not spin.

Front load or top load

Front load washers use less water and spin faster, so they are the ones that cause the most smell and seal problems. The rubber door boot collects moisture and lint. A small leak at the boot or a clogged pump filter behind the lower panel is the classic failure. Bearings last a long time but are costly when they go.

Top load washers with an agitator are simpler. Typical failures are the lid switch, the drive belt, the coupling between motor and transmission, and the shift actuator. High efficiency top loaders with no agitator add a little more electronics, so more problems come from the control board and sensors.

Error codes by brand

Your display often tells the technician where to start. Write the code down before you call.

  • LG: OE or oE means the washer cannot drain. UE means an unbalanced load. LE points to the motor.
  • Samsung: 5C, 5E or SC points to a drain problem. UE or 4C is a water supply or balance issue.
  • Whirlpool and Maytag front load: F21 means a drain problem. F5E1 and F7E1 point to motor or control faults.
  • Bosch: E18 and E19 usually mean a drain pump or filter problem.

Codes are a starting point, not a final answer. Technicians confirm the part with a test before replacing it.

What you can check first

These steps are safe and sometimes solve the problem before a visit:

  1. Unplug the washer and plug it back in after one minute, then run a short cycle.
  2. Make sure the door or lid closes fully and nothing blocks the latch.
  3. Look behind the machine for a kinked drain or inlet hose.
  4. Check that both water taps are fully open.
  5. Remove heavy items or split a large load. An oversized load triggers imbalance errors.

Do not open a washer that still has water in it, and do not force the door lock. If you have to clean the pump filter yourself, put towels and a shallow tray down first.

Is it worth repairing?

Washers last about 10 to 13 years. Under 8 years old, repair is almost always the right call. Between 8 and 12, repair a cheap fault such as a pump, belt, hose or switch. Past 12, or with a failed bearing, a cracked tub or a bad control board on an older machine, replacement is usually better value. See the repair or replace rule in our cost guide.

FAQ

Why is my washer not draining?

The most common causes are a clogged drain pump filter or hose and a failed drain pump. Coins, socks and lint are frequent culprits. Read our guide to a washer that will not drain.

How much does washer repair cost?

Most repairs are $150 to $350 including the part. A simple clog is cheaper, bearings and tub seals cost more. The $60 diagnostic is credited toward the repair.

Is it worth repairing a 10 year old washer?

If the fault is a pump, belt, hose, switch or lock, usually yes. If it is the bearings, the tub or the control board, compare the quote with a new washer.

Why does my front load washer smell?

Moisture, detergent and lint build up in the door boot and the drain trap. Leave the door ajar after each wash, use a washer cleaner monthly, and clean the pump filter. If the boot is torn, it needs replacing.

Do you repair all washer brands?

Yes. We repair Samsung, LG, Whirlpool, GE, Bosch, Frigidaire, Maytag and others.
