Common refrigerator problems

Fridge warm, freezer cold Evaporator fan, damper, frost blocking airflow Replace the fan or defrost parts
Both sections warm Condenser coils, start relay, compressor, control board Clean coils, replace relay or board
Water under the fridge Clogged defrost drain, cracked water line, inlet valve Clear the drain, replace line or valve

Ice maker not making ice Frozen fill tube, water inlet valve, ice maker module Thaw, replace valve or module
Loud buzzing, clicking or humming Evaporator or condenser fan, compressor relay Replace the fan or relay
Door will not seal Worn gasket, hinge, level Replace the gasket or adjust

Start with the biggest one: refrigerator not cooling. Leaks have their own guide too: refrigerator leaking water.

Which style of fridge do you have

Top freezer and bottom freezer. Simple and long lived. Failures are usually the defrost system, the evaporator fan or the door seal.

Side by side and French door. Many more parts: ice and water dispenser, water filter, several fans and an electronic control. More leaks and ice maker faults show up here.

Built-in and counter-depth. Panels, custom fits and sealed systems make these more specialized. Premium brands such as Sub-Zero use their own parts and diagnostics.

Ice maker and water problems

If your fridge has an ice maker and water dispenser, they share a water line. A small drip from that line or a bad inlet valve causes most leaks inside and under the fridge. Ice that clumps, tastes bad or stops coming usually points to an old filter, a frozen fill tube or a failed ice maker assembly. Replace the water filter every six months. See ice maker repair and freezer repair for those cases.

What you can do first

  1. Check the temperature settings. Fridge should be at or below 40°F, freezer at 0°F.
  2. Make sure the doors close fully and nothing blocks the gasket.
  3. Pull out the grille at the bottom or back and vacuum the condenser coils. Dust blocks heat release, so it is one of the most common causes of poor cooling.
  4. Do not pack the fridge or block the vents between the freezer and fridge sections.
  5. Do not unplug a fridge repeatedly. Wait five minutes before restarting.

Food safety when the fridge stops

The USDA says food in a closed refrigerator stays safe for about four hours after the power or cooling stops. A full freezer holds for about 48 hours, a half-full one for about 24. Keep the doors shut and move perishables into a cooler with ice if repair will take longer.

Sealed system and refrigerant

A failed compressor, a leaking evaporator or low refrigerant is sealed system work. It needs a technician trained in refrigerant handling and costs far more than a fan or relay, often $500 or more. We tell you before you commit, and compare it with the price of a new refrigerator.

Is it worth repairing?

Refrigerators last about 13 to 17 years. If it is under 10 years old, repair almost every fault. In the 10 to 15 range, repair fans, relays, heaters, valves and gaskets. For a sealed-system failure on a fridge past 12, replacement is usually the better value. More in the cost guide.

What refrigerator repair costs

Job Typical total with part
Diagnostic $60 flat, credited to the repair
Clean coils, clear a drain, replace a gasket $100 to $250
Fan, relay, defrost heater or thermostat $200 to $400
Water inlet valve or ice maker $180 to $400
Control board $300 to $500
Compressor or sealed system $500 and up

The technician gives you the exact total before work starts.

How it works

  1. Call or send the brand, model, what the fridge is doing and what temperature it shows.
  2. Call to check the next open appointment; availability depends on the schedule. Tell us if it is a warm fridge.
  3. The technician finds the fault and quotes the total. The $60 is credited if you go ahead.
  4. Repair and test. Ask what the repair includes when you book.

FAQ

Why is my refrigerator not cooling?

Dirty condenser coils, a failed evaporator fan, a defrost problem or a bad start relay are the usual causes. Our not cooling guide walks through them.

How much does refrigerator repair cost?

Most repairs are $200 to $450 with the part. Sealed system work starts around $500. The $60 diagnostic is credited toward the repair.

Can the food be saved when the fridge stops?

Keep the doors closed. A closed fridge keeps food safe for about four hours. Move items to a cooler with ice if the repair takes longer.

Do you repair Sub-Zero and other built-in refrigerators?

Yes, including Sub-Zero. Built-in units may need a specific part and a longer visit.

Why is my fridge making a loud noise?

Usually a dirty or failing evaporator or condenser fan. A technician can find which one by listening and testing it.
