The top call has its own page: oven not heating. If you have a cooktop with burners that fail, see stove, range and cooktop repair.

Gas oven or electric oven

Electric ovens have a bake element at the bottom, a broil element at the top and, on convection models, a fan. A visible break, blister or bright spot on the element means it needs replacing. Elements are cheap, and replacing them is the most common electric oven repair.

Gas ovens use a safety igniter. The igniter must draw enough current to open the gas valve. As it ages, it glows but never opens the valve, so the oven never lights. That igniter is the number one gas oven failure and is an easy fix for a qualified technician.

Gas safety: if you smell gas, do not turn lights or appliances on or off. Leave the home and call the gas company or 911 from outside. Gas line work and valve work belong to a qualified technician only.

Self-clean cycle trouble

Many ovens fail right after a self-clean. The high heat of the cycle stresses the control board and the thermal fuse, and it can leave the door latch locked. It is a coincidence of heat, not a defect in your cooking. Before running a self-clean, remove racks and wipe heavy spills, and run it on a cooler day.

What you can check first

  1. Check the clock and power. A blank display may be a tripped breaker.
  2. Make sure the oven is not in demo or sabbath mode, or locked.
  3. Test the oven with an oven thermometer. Many “wrong temperature” complaints are within 10 to 15°F, which is normal.
  4. For electric ovens, look for a damaged bake element. Unplug or turn off the breaker before you touch anything.
  5. For gas ovens, if the burner clicks but never lights, stop and call.

Is it worth repairing?

Ovens and ranges last about 13 to 15 years. Elements, igniters, sensors and latches are very good repairs. A failed control board on a premium range is usually worth fixing. On a basic 15 year old range, compare. See the cost guide.

FAQ

Why is my oven not heating?

For electric ovens it is usually the bake element, a relay or the control board. For gas ovens it is usually the igniter. See oven not heating.

Is it safe to repair a gas oven myself?

No. Gas ovens need a qualified technician. If you smell gas, leave the home and call the gas company.

How much does oven repair cost?

Most repairs are $150 to $400 with the part. The $60 diagnostic is credited toward the repair.

Why did my oven stop working after a self-clean?

The heat of the cycle can blow the thermal fuse, damage the control board or lock the door latch. A technician can test which one failed.

Do you repair wall ovens and double ovens?

Yes. Wall ovens, double ovens and ranges are all serviced.
